Health Workers Empowered with Sickle Cell and Asthma Management Skills in Obuasi

Health workers in the Ashanti Region’s vibrant town of Obuasi have recently received comprehensive training in the management of sickle cell disease and asthma.

Sponsored by AngloGold Ashanti Ghana, Obuasi Mine, this capacity-building initiative aims to equip healthcare professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide optimal care and support to patients.

The program addresses critical gaps in open-access education for healthcare workers, who play a crucial role in the well-being of individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease and asthma.

Sickle cell disease is a prevalent genetic disorder that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Unfortunately, healthcare professionals often face challenges in accessing adequate resources and education to effectively manage this condition.

Similarly, asthma, a non-communicable disease, remains a widespread concern throughout various stages of life, especially among children. Inadequate human resources capable of handling asthma cases further exacerbate the issue.

Dr. John Gyasi Banin, an Emergency Physician Specialist at the AngloGold Ashanti Health Foundation, emphasized the significance of organizing capacity-building programs for health professionals in both the Obuasi East and Obuasi Municipality.

This initiative aligns with AngloGold Ashanti’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan, which aims to bolster healthcare provision within the company’s operational area.

Dr. Banin expressed, “We fully recognize the intricacies involved in managing sickle cell disease and asthma. Therefore, we have partnered with AGA and the Health Directorates of both districts to implement this comprehensive capacity-building program. We firmly believe that it will effectively bridge the knowledge gap within the health sector.”

Elizabeth Boateng, from the Environmental Department of AngloGold Ashanti, highlighted that the workshop was designed to create a platform for health workers to learn from one another, exchanging different approaches and problem-solving techniques.

Linda Mensah, a participant from the Sanso Health Center, expressed her appreciation for AngloGold Ashanti’s training program.

She commended the company for broadening her knowledge of innovative methods and approaches to managing sickle cell disease and asthma, surpassing what she had learned during her formal education.

Another nurse from the AGA Health Foundation highlighted that both asthma and sickle cell disease were commonly reported conditions at the hospital.

The training program provided valuable on-the-field experience, equipping healthcare workers with practical skills to effectively manage patients with these diseases.
